# Empty Link: What the Error Means and How to Fix It

Source: https://allyway.ai/glossary/empty-link

An empty link is a link element that has no accessible name – no text, no alt text on an image inside it and no aria-label. Screen readers can only announce it as a bare link, so users cannot tell where it leads.

An empty link is a link with no accessible name: there is no text inside it that a screen reader can read out. Accessibility scanners report it as "Empty link" or "Link has no accessible name". It almost always comes from icon links, logo links and image links whose picture has no text alternative.

## What it means

Every link needs a name that tells people where it goes. Sighted visitors see a shopping cart icon and understand it. A screen reader finds no text and announces only "link" or reads out the web address. Someone who browses by listening, or who pulls up a list of all links on the page, hears a row of unnamed links and has to guess.

The rule behind it is [WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context)](https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG22/Understanding/link-purpose-in-context.html), a Level A criterion of [WCAG 2.2](https://allyway.ai/regulations/wcag-2-2): the purpose of each link must be clear from the link text alone or together with its programmatically determined context (the same sentence, list item or table cell). An empty link has no text at all, so it fails before context is even considered. W3C lists "not providing an accessible name for an image which is the only content in a link" as a common failure (F89). Because links are interface components, an unnamed link also fails 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value.

| Cause | Why the link is empty | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| **Image link without alt** | The image has no text alternative | Add an `alt` text that names the target |
| **Image link with `alt=""`** | Empty alt hides the only content | Write a real alt text |
| **Icon font or SVG only** | Icons carry no text | Add `aria-label` or visually hidden text |
| **Link with no content** | Leftover `<a>` from a template or slider | Remove it or give it text |

> **Tip:** > **Name the destination, not the picture**
> For a logo that links to the home page, "Example Shop home page" is better than "Logo". The name should say where the link goes.

## Examples

Typical empty links are social media icons in the footer and a logo in the header. The [missing alt attribute](https://allyway.ai/glossary/missing-alt-attribute) is often the real cause.

```html title="Example"
<!-- Empty link: icon only, no name -->
<a href="/cart"><svg aria-hidden="true">…</svg></a>
<!-- Fixed: accessible name with aria-label -->
<a href="/cart" aria-label="Shopping cart"><svg aria-hidden="true">…</svg></a>
<!-- Fixed: image link with descriptive alt text -->
<a href="/"><img src="logo.svg" alt="Example Shop home page"></a>
```

**Do:** Do

Give every icon or image link a short name for its destination – via [alt text](https://allyway.ai/glossary/alt-text) on the image, an `aria-label`, or visually hidden text. Delete links that have no content and no purpose.

**Don't:** Don't

Rely on a `title` attribute alone, set `alt=""` on the only image inside a link, or use names like "icon" or "click".

## How to fix an empty link

If your site runs on a CMS, icon links usually come from the theme or a menu block. In [WordPress](https://allyway.ai/integrations/wordpress-accessibility-integration), check the navigation and social icon blocks first.

## Questions

Q: What does "empty link" mean in an accessibility report?
A: It means a link has no accessible name. A screen reader cannot announce where it goes, so it reads only "link" or the URL.

Q: Is an empty link a WCAG violation?
A: Yes. It fails 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value, both Level A. That makes it relevant for laws based on WCAG, such as the [European Accessibility Act](https://allyway.ai/regulations/eaa).

Q: Does a title attribute fix an empty link?
A: Not reliably. W3C treats `title` as a supplement to link text, and many screen readers and touch devices ignore it. Use visible text, alt text or `aria-label`.

Q: How do I find empty links on my website?
A: Run the [free WCAG scanner](https://allyway.ai/free-wcag-accessibility-scanner-for-websites) on your homepage. It lists empty links together with other errors such as an [empty button](https://allyway.ai/glossary/empty-button).

Q: Can allyWay fix empty links automatically?
A: Yes. allyWay finds unnamed links on every page and gives them clear names that screen readers can read aloud, written by AI from your page content. The [automatic fixes](https://allyway.ai/automatic-accessibility-fixes-for-website) are applied by the allyWay script, so your CMS, theme and files stay as they are – and every fix is logged.
